The 2023/24 Ethiopian top flight campaign kicked off today with two fixtures at the Adama Science and Technology University Stadium.
The opening fixture of the brand new campaign saw newly promoted Ethiopia Niged Bank taking on Adama Ketema who were playing on home turf, Deputy state minster of culture and sport Ambassador Mesfin Cherent and other honorable guests were in attendance to raise the curtains for the new campaign.
Six summer recruits were on the starting 11 for Yitagesu Endale’s Adama Ketema side while Betselot Leulseged named nine new players in their starting 11 after after a summer of massive squad overhaul for Niged Bank.
Newly promoted Ethiopia Niged Bank were by far the better side in both halves while Adama opted to play with caution,Niged bank who were playing with two forwards upfront frequently visited Adama’s box but failed on to capitalize in their domination with their rushed decision in the attacking third.
In a match where clear cut chances were far and few the opening fixture of the new campaign ended in a frustrating goalless draw.
In the late kickoff, Ethiopia Bunna opened their campaign with a slender victory over Sidama Bunna.
In what was the very first competitive game for Nikola Kavazovic Ethiopia Bunna were very aggressive from the get go meanwhile Sidama Bunna failed to build on their impressive Sidama Gofere Cup performance as they were the second best team in the entirety of the game.
Ethiopia Bunna who were mising several key players due to injury had the control of the game but they were unable to create enough clear cut chances, but teenager Ermias Shumbeza 59th minute rocket strike from the edge of the box was enough for Ethiopia Bunna to claim all the three points.The win meant Ethiopia Bunna collected all three points in the opening weekend for the first time in three campaigns.
The remaining six fixtures of the opening round will take place in the upcoming weekend.
