WPL Kick-Off Date Confirmed as EFF Plans Format Change

The Ethiopian Football Federation has officially announced the start date for the 2026/27 Ethiopian Women’s Premier League season.

The federation revealed today that the new Ethiopian Women’s Premier League campaign is set to kick off on September 17, 2026.

Alongside the start date announcement, the federation disclosed plans to convene a meeting with club representatives in the near future to discuss a potential transition back to a home and away competition format.

The Ethiopian Women’s Premier League, established during the 2011/12 season, shifted to a centralized single venue format in 2021 following the COVID-19 pandemic. The federation intends to consult with the clubs to discuss reverting to the traditional home and away format starting this coming season.

Ahead of the new league kickoff CBE will represent the country in the CECAFA qualifiers for the CAF Women’s Champions League. Furthermore, with the Ethiopian womens national team drawn against Rwanda in the Los Angeles Olympics women’s football qualifiers in early October, the domestic league is expected to pause just a few weeks after its start.
