The EFF League Cup has commenced with two first round game played today in Addis Ababa. ArbaMinch Ketema cruise past Hawassa Ketema whilst Ethiopia Bunna overcame Hadiya Hossana on penalty shootouts to advance to the quarter final.
Former Dedebit winger Tadele Mengesha scored the solitary goal when his side dumped Hawassa Ketema out to book a place in the quarter finals. Mengesha joined ArbaMinch last August after his contract with Dedebit ended.
Hawassa Ketema were runner-ups in 2014/15 but now they said good bye to the competition at its early stage. Hawassa players were jeered by Ethiopia Bunna fans in the midst of the game.
Ethiopia Bunna has to wait till the penalty shootouts to advance to the quarter final. Hadiya Hossana kept Bunna at bay for much of the time through the heroics of keeper Jackson Fita and the grace of the upright.
Bunna eventually won the game 4-2 on penalties as Ayele Tesfaye and Hossana captain Adnan Kassim missed their penalty kicks. Bunna’s midfielder Yosef Damuye has received plaudits from the crowd for his ‘Panenka’ style penalty kick.
First round games will continue tomorrow as Adama Ketema and Electric Square off at Addis Ababa Stadium. Sidama Bunna and Dashen Bira battle it out for a place in quarter final whilst Diredawa Ketema are up against Ethiopia Nigd Bank. Both games will be played at Abebe Bikila Memorial Stadium.
