CBE Records Historic Victory in CECAFA WCL Opener

Ethiopia Nigd Bank (CBE) kicked off their sixth consecutive CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA Qualifiers campaign in emphatic style thrashing Djibouti’s FC Ujeco 11-0 at the Kigali Pele Stadium.

Drawn in Group B alongside FC Ujeco and Uganda’s Kawempe Muslim Ladies, the 2024 regional champions made a bold statement of intent. Head coach Birhanu Gizaw handed debuts to new signings Mihret Ayele and Mahlet Mitiku in the starting eleven, and the Ethiopian champions dominated proceedings from the opening whistle.

It took just four minutes for CBE to break the deadlock when Emush Daniel found the back of the net. The Best Player of the 2024/25 Ethiopian Women’s Premier League, Emush went on to complete a first half hat-trick with goals in the 17th and 36th minutes. Further strikes from Rediet Asresahegn, Tarikwa Debiso and Etsegenet Girma sent the Ethiopian side into the break with a commanding 6-0 lead.

CBE showed no signs of slowing down after the restart. Emush Daniel added two more goals in the 60th and 73rd minutes to cap off a remarkable five star performance.

Newly signed rising star Lidya Iyasu made an immediate impact off the bench scoring twice in the 66th and 76th minutes. Rediet Asresahegn then wrapped up the scoring with a goal in stoppage time, sealing a breathtaking 11-0 triumph.

The 11-0 victory marks CBE’s largest ever winning margin in their CAF Women’s Champions League regional qualifiers history. Their previous record margin was 10 goals, set in 2021 when they defeated Zanzibar’s New Generation 10-1 and South Sudan’s Yei Joint Stars 10-0.

CBE will look to secure their spot in the semi-finals when they take on Uganda’s Kawempe Muslim Ladies in their final Group B fixture on Monday, August 24.
