Nigist Bekele Earns Trial with French Club

Ethiopian international winger Nigist Bekele is currently in France for an official trial with French Division 2 Féminine side FC Metz.

Nigist arrived in France eight days ago and has since joined FC Metz’s training sessions as part of her evaluation. Sources close to Soccer Ethiopia indicate that she has made a strong impression during the opening stages of her trial as she looks to earn a permanent contract with the French club.

A graduate of the Ethiopian Sports Academy, Nigist established herself as one of Ethiopia’s brightest attacking talents at an early age. During her domestic career she represented Bole Sub City, Mechal and most recently CBE SA. She also finished as the top scorer in the 2022/23 Ethiopian Women’s Higher League. On the international stage Nigist has represented Ethiopia at every youth level before becoming a regular member of the senior national team.

Founded in 1974, FC Metz is one of the established clubs in French women’s football and currently competes in Division 2 Féminine. If Nigist completes her trial successfully and signs a permanent deal she will become another Ethiopian female footballer to play in Europe following the path of national team star Loza Abera who previously enjoyed a successful spell with Maltese club Birkirkara FC.
