On Friday, the Ethiopian Football Federation announced that Webetu Abate has left his role as head coach of the Ethiopian national team. The decision comes a week after Webetu handed in a letter of resignation. According to the statement from EFF, the two sides have parted ways on mutual consent.
Webetu has led The Waliyas to AFCON 2022 which took place in Cameroon and CHAN 2023 in Algeria. He also registered a historic win against Egypt in AFCON qualifiers last year. However, questions have been raised about the team’s performance once they reached tournament football.
The coach faced huge criticism after the national team lost its two qualifying games against Guinea in Morroco and this seems like the main reason for Webetu’s departure with more than a year left on his contract.
The Ethiopia national team still has to face Egypt and Malawi with its hope of qualifying for another AFCON all but gone.
