Uganda and Tanzania won their respective group games in the DSTV CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup on Tuesday, November 24 in Hawassa.
In the early kick off, Uganda crashed Zanzibar 4-0. In one sided match Cranes run rampant against hapless Zanzibar. Skipper Farouk Miya opened the score in the 10th minute as he struck from close range. In the 16th minute Zanzibar goalie Ali Mwadini brought down Erisa Ssekisambu in the area. Djiboutian referee Aden Djamal sent off Mwadini and Miya completed his brace from the resulting spot kick.
Cranes further extended their lead in the 48th minute through the dazzling Erisa Ssekisambu when he slots home inside the area. Zanzibar reduced to 9 men when Azam midfielder Mudathir Yaya Abbas received his marching order for a flying tackle on Ssekisambu. Ceasar Okhuti notched the 4th goal shortly after Mudathir’s dismissal. The win left Zanzibar bottom of the group table whilst Uganda revived their chance to progress to the quarter finals.
Tanzania triumphed over Rwanda in Group A encounter to book a place in the quarter finals. Said Hamis Juma gave the Kilimanjaro Stars a lead through a brilliant free kick in the 23rd minute. Simon Msuva extended the lead in the 78th minute with a simple finish after a dreadful goalkeeping from Oliver Kwizera. Veteran striker Jacques Tuyisenge pulled one back for the Amazubi with a tap in.
